It’s been such an incredible year. Having highs and lows, both in my business and personal life. I’ve wanted to write it all down, but it’s been floating in my head – jumbled and unready to.  Until today, it was perfectly timed and ready to share.

This was my 6th Christmas at Scissor Happy Hair Studio. MY SIXTH!  It’s hard to believe that I’ve been in my studio that long! I remember when I first opened and met with my former sales consultant – he told me that “most salons of my type don’t see three years in business.” His words were not very encouraging, even if they were true. (Don’t think for a moment that he wasn’t one of the first people I contacted on my 3rd anniversary!)

This has not been an easy road. Every decision – hours, product selection, color lines, sick days, advertising and marketing, accounting, handling issues, working late – are mine. It reflects my priorities, thoughts, and dreams for my studio. It sets the tone for the reputation and image I have in my community. Every smile that leaves my salon – every referral that enters – and, every spirit I lift…is all me. I would have it no other way.

So, 2016 – yes, that…

It’s been that year. A year of growth. It started with an observation – that led to an awakening.

I went alone to the Premier Hair Show in Geneva, Wisconsin in 2015. I sat in the front and was just mesmerized. Something was happening on stage that I had not seen before. There was the usual funky styles and vibrant colors, but something else intrigued me. Hair was shown as soft, flowing and simply beautiful. It was not overworked or complicated. It was pretty and eye catching. It was bold and soft.

Then, I realized I wasn’t sure I knew how they created it?! This set my mind racing. Was this foiled highlights? Was I seeing new visions and techniques? I went back to the salon and started researching. When I found the answers, I also found a whole new world of hairdressing and coloring. I was STUNNED – followed by panicked! I knew it was only a matter of time before I was asked to recreate looks like balayage and ombre.  Up until now, I didn’t feel a desire to learn the techniques, as I thought they would be short lived fads that I could outlast. I knew, at the hair show, that this just wasn’t true.  And, either I jumped aboard the train or be left in the dust.

Elyse and I

So, what does a solo stylist do when she doesn’t know what to do? Well, I pray first then I contact people who do these things – and, do them well. God put a very important person in my life at just the right time. Elyse Rox of Rockit Studio in Schaumburg came to the rescue. She has been a mentor, friend, and total motivator. She opened my eyes to a whole new world of hair!

From classes, educators, education, products, and hair forums – she knew it all! And was open, honest, patient and willing to share. I have never met anyone like her – I love her and have the utmost respect for her, as well.

I have taken so many classes to prune my habits, hone my skills and learn new ones. And  I know this is just the beginning. I have so many more on the horizon so that I can be the one who brings these trends to you. I have fallen in love with painting hair and balayage. As time passes, I fall more and more in love with my field and the creativity it brings out of me. I love bringing  it all to you!

2016 marked the first year I could really relax a bit with the back office things and focus on my business. Having such an amazing accountant to guide me has been a blessing. Her budgeting plan and guidance has helped me focus on what is most important in the Happy Chair – YOU!

This year I’ve also had clients return after years of being away. To see those faces again, seeking me out, just makes my heart happy!

We can’t sum up this year without the mention of so many of the icons that we lost! From David Bowie who has such a strong impact on fashion as well as his strong impact in music to Prince who not only was one of the most talented and electrifying performers of our time, we will miss them. Much of my love of art, music and the creative life is due to them. May they color heaven beautiful.

Oh and let’s not forget the numerous contests and fun that was had in the salon! The Halloween Bertie Bots challenge was a hit and personal favorite…I can’t wait to have another fun year in 2017.

So as I wrap up 2016, I am grateful for those who have been with me from the beginning and just as grateful for those who have just found their way to the Happy Chair. I look to the future of Scissor Happy and see even more opportunities to seize while making the world a more beautiful place…one happy client at a time!

Happy New Year!
